Inside Kindiki’s strategy to wrestle the Mt Kenya vote from rivals

NAIROBI,Kenya Sep 20 – From the traditional shrines of Meru to Nembure in Embu and, finally, Kirigiti in Kiambu, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is attempting to change the way Mt Kenya speaks politically with elders at the centre of the operation. For several weeks, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku carried an axe around Mt Kenya that he wielded it as a political metaphor, threatening to split the Mountain into East and West if leaders from the western counties refused to recognise Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as the region’s political spokesman and support President William Ruto. On Saturday, the axe was finally surrendered. At Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu, elders from Mt Kenya East and West took the weapon from Ruku and handed him a flywhisk, directing him to preach reconciliation and unity instead. The axe had been used to dramatise the most contentious question to emerge in Mt Kenya politics ahead of the 2027 General Election, whether the region should remain a single political bloc or whether Mt Kenya East should chart a separate course from the West. Its return marked the latest turn in a campaign that has steadily shifted from splitting the Mountain to deciding who has the authority to speak for it. The elders meeting at Kirigiti endorsed the Deputy President as spokesman and representative of the wider Mt Kenya region, pledging to advance its interests an...

Value of goods through Sharjah-Oman logistics corridor jumps 66% in three months

The value of goods transiting through Sharjah and Oman logistics corridor has jumped more than 66 per cent in the first three months of operations as shippers looks to avoid the turbulent Strait of Hormuz amid the continuing Iran war. Goods worth Dh1.7 billion ($463.21 million) have been traded since May 17, when the corridor was launched to allow shipments to cross borders seamlessly into the Sultanate’s ports.Launched by Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority with Oman Customs, the dedicated corridor reflects the success of an “integrated sea–land logistics model that supports smoother trade flows and improves supply chain efficiency”, Sharjah Customs said in a statement on Sunday. The initiative allows importers, exporters, freight companies and logistics service providers with “more flexible and competitive logistics solutions”, it added. With the Iran war now in its seventh month, the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global route that powers global commerce, remains effectively shut, with continued Iranian attacks on commercial shipping. The significantly reduced flow of vessels through the narrow waterway, through which a fifth of global oil and gas passed before the conflict, has also disrupted commodities trade and upended supply chains. To circumvent the strait, heavy goods vehicles are now used far more extensively in the UAE to collect everything from supermarket sta...

PS Omollo defends Ruto’s non-discriminatory approach to development

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo has defended the government’s approach to national development, saying public resources and services must reach Kenyans without discrimination based on region, community or political affiliation. Speaking Sunday during a church development fund drive in Narok East, Omollo said President William Ruto has set a new standard for leadership through what he described as “a non-discriminatory and inclusive” approach to national development. “It has not happened in the history of this country that we have a leader who develops the country equally. For the first time, we have a leader focused on equitable transformation across our country in ways that are immeasurable,” he said. The PS said the government’s development agenda is focused on ensuring that communities across the country benefit from public investments and services, regardless of their region or political affiliation. Omollo further told off those disparaging President Ruto, saying Kenyans should focus on the tangible development record and demand clear commitments from anyone seeking their votes. “President Ruto has raised the bar on leadership. Anyone who comes to look for your vote, the marking scheme is already there. Ask them what their agenda on roads, education, healthcare, not mere rhetoric. That’s the only way we are going to chan...
