Nato welcomes Greenland deal as Trump says it will give US ‘permanent security control’

The US and Denmark have announced a deal on Greenland’s security, resolving a diplomatic dispute sparked by President Donald Trump’s threats to seize it by force. Nato said the deal would help stabilise the region, as Trump said Denmark would grant the US “permanent control over security, and all other needs” in the semi-autonomous Danish territory. The leaders of Denmark and Greenland welcomed the deal to “strengthen security”, which they said was expected to be signed next week, but did not outline its contents. The deal comes after months of threats by Trump to “take” Greenland over national security concerns, citing its strategic location for defence purposes and its mineral wealth. No text of the agreement has been released. Trump said the deal came with “no cost to the United States” and would grant it the ability “to do what is necessary” to “secure and defend the security of Greenland”, in a post on Truth Social. He said it included a rule that no US adversary could maintain a military presence in Greenland or “make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval”. A Nato spokesperson said the military alliance welcomed the deal, which would “help advance security, stability and cooperation in this vital region”. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she was “pleased that there is a prospect of a good agreement” for all three parties,...

Germany braces for key state elections where far right party AfD seeks another breakthrough

Germany is gearing up for two more pivotal state elections on Sunday: in the capital Berlin and in the largely rural region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. All eyes are on the far-right AfD, which after recording its best ever result in the recent Saxony-Anhalt elections, is hoping to once again make sweeping gains. The anti-immigration party's surging popularity is proving challenging for Chancellor Friedrich Merz and both elections are expected to further test his leadership. Story by Eliza Herbert.

Mountain to climb: Elders’ endorsement boosts Kindiki’s bid to return Mt Kenya region to Ruto

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki with elders at the solemn Mt Kenya elders assembly at Kirigiti Stadium, Kiambu County, where he was endorsed as the Mt Kenya spokesperson. The battle for political influence in Mt Kenya took a new turn on Saturday after a section of elders from the region endorsed Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as their spokesman and called for unity behind President William Ruto. The endorsement was made at the historic Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County, where elders from the Gikuyu, Embu and Meru communities gathered for a meeting aimed at restoring unity in a region whose political loyalties have come under strain ahead of the 2027 General Election. In a declaration signed by representatives of Kiama Kia Ma, Kikuyu Council of Elders, Njuri Ncheke, Kiama Kia Muembu, Ngome and Nyangi Ndiriri, the elders said Prof Kindiki would represent and advance the interests and aspirations of the Mt Kenya region.“We hereby endorse and mandate Prof Kithure Kindiki to serve as our spokesperson and representative in advancing the interests and aspirations of the Mount Kenya Region,” the elders said. The elders also endorsed the Ruto-Kindiki administration, saying the two leaders had contributed to development in the region, particularly in infrastructure and agriculture. They singled out investments in coffee, dairy and tea, sectors that remain important to the livelihoods of millions of people in the region.“We affirm our support to President William Ruto and Deputy President Prof Kithure Kindiki in their efforts to promote peace, development, economic growth and prosperity for our people and for the nation as a whole,” they declared. Also Read: The axe and the altar - 50,000 Mt Kenya elders gather to save political marriage“As President William Ruto’s helper in uniting Kenya and moving our country forward, I will continue to defend and represent the interests of our region of Mount Kenya,” said Prof Kindiki. The meeting was also marked by a cultural ceremony in which Prof Kindiki was endorsed and handed instruments of power by the elders.Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during the solemn assembly of Mt Kenya Elders at Kirigiti Stadium, Kiambu County.Three reconciliation goats were shared, one each for the Gikuyu, Embu and Meru communities, in a symbolic gesture intended to reinforce the message that the mountain should remain united. The axe, which had become a symbol of the campaign to split Mt Kenya into East and West, was also returned to the elders. But former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, an ardent critic of the Ruto administration and self-styled Mt Kenya political supremo, was quick to dismiss the event, terming it a futile move and urging the elders to give back the axe to Prof Kindiki and Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku to hand it to Dr Ruto.“Mr Kithure Kindiki and Mr Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku have thrown in the towel, not because they want the unity of the mountain, but because they have miserably failed,” said Mr Gachagua. He added: “Having failed to divide Mt Kenya into the imaginary West and East, the mountaineers are aware of new efforts to divide the former Central Province. This too will fail. Our people are too intelligent to fall for such innuendos,” Mr Gachagua said.Saturday’s declaration by the elders placed considerable emphasis on unity, recalling the historical, social, economic and cultural ties binding the Mt Kenya communities. The elders said political divisions, ethnic stereotyping and internal rivalry could undermine social cohesion, economic wellbeing and the region’s future prosperity. They also invoked the region’s history of supporting national leadership, listing the administrations of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta, as well as the support given to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua when he was President Ruto’s running mate in 2022.“I salute our elders. We have been one community in matters of politics, business and culture. Why should we be divided by political differences now?” the DP said. Also Read:‘Recognise Kindiki as spokesman’ - Ruku sets Mt Kenya East -West unity conditionHe added: “It does not matter whether a leader comes from Nyeri, Kiambu or anywhere else; we have been together, and we have to safeguard our unity.”The elders described Prof Kindiki as the latest senior leader from the region to occupy the country’s second-highest office and as the bearer of Mt Kenya’s political aspirations. They further called on the region’s communities to participate in peaceful political activities and provide President Ruto and Prof Kindiki with what they described as a conducive political environment in pursuit of Kenya’s long-term national interests. The resolution represents a significant development in the contest over the political direction of Mt Kenya, particularly as competing groups seek to influence the region ahead of the 2027 election. The gathering followed weeks of consultations between elders from Mt Kenya East and West.

'Fragile' Spurs drop into relegation zone as Villa record first Premier League win of the season

Tottenham Hotspur's nightmare start to the season continued on Saturday as they fell to a 3-2 defeat at home to Aston Villa, a result that leaves them in the Premier League relegation zone.Spurs have now gone five league games without a win and dropped to 18th in the table. It is a damning indictment of a club that spent £325 million on new signings in the summer to push for a top-six finish. Spurs must now adjust those expectations to make sure they simply don't find themselves in the same situation as last season when they needed a win on the final day just to preserve their top-flight status.Chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" from visiting Villa fans aimed at Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi before the final whistle didn't feel at all ironic. Given how bad they have started the season, the Italian may spend the international break nervously wondering if he can pull off a repeat of last season's rescue act or if the Spurs board will decide he is not up to the task.In De Zerbi's defence, the 3-2 scoreline is misleading on many fronts. Spurs actually started brightly, and Villa were indebted to goalkeeper Zion Suzuki for keeping them in the game. The Japanese international pulled off four stunning saves – twice denying Savio, while also keeping out efforts from Archie Gray and Sandro Tonali. It felt like only a matter of time before Spurs broke their duck and scored in t...

CS Murkomen assures of security during election, warns drug dealers sponsoring politicians

Interior and National Administration CS Kipchumba Murkomen has assured the country of peaceful campaigns and elections next year. “As the Minister in charge of security, I will ensure that next year’s election is free, fair, and secure,” he said. The CS warned politicians against profiling others and inciting violence, saying the Government would not allow such actions and that those found culpable would face legal action. “There’s someone calling others traitors and saying that he will make sure he looks for agents of the President’s party and harm them. We won’t let that happen.” Murkomen further put on notice drug dealers using proceeds from illicit alcohol to finance political violence in Nyeri and other parts of the country, saying they are on the radar of security agencies. “Those financing bad politics of hatred and goonism through proceeds of illicit alcohol and drugs are on our radar, and it will take the shortest time possible to apprehend them,” he warned. He said the government has strengthened the Anti-Narcotics Unit and has scaled up the crackdown on industrial manufacturers of illicit alcohol and their suppliers. Murkomen was speaking at St George’s, Gataragwa-Kiawara grounds in Nyeri County, where he presided over the launch of the Kieni West Onion Farmers Cooperative. Commenting on the cooperative, Murkomen said the government will continue making targeted inte...

Motorists Issue New Ultimatum to EPRA After Museveni's Remarks

The Motorist Association of Kenya (MAK) has called for a full forensic audit of Kenya’s government-to-government fuel procurement system following remarks by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni about the use of middlemen. In a statement issued on Saturday, September 19, MAK said Museveni’s account had raised fresh questions about how petroleum products were sourced and priced under the arrangement and called for greater scrutiny of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).The association demanded an independent investigation into fuel imports, procurement, pricing and distribution in Kenya. It has also called for details of the intermediaries involved, the commissions paid, the contracts signed and the beneficiaries of the system. “MAK therefore demands: First, a full forensic audit of the G-to-G petroleum procurement system, including all intermediaries, commissions, contracts, pricing formulas and beneficiaries,” the statement read.In addition, the lobby said the actual landed cost of each fuel cargo should be disclosed, together with the margins added before the products reach consumers. MAK further reiterated a previous call for an independent review of EPRA’s pricing system and its independence. It said every cost included in pump prices should be independently verified and protected from political or commercial interference. The association’s demands come after Museveni said a Kenyan senator had alerted him that Uganda was buying petroleum products through middlemen in Kenya. Museveni said the senator’s insight prompted Uganda to move towards direct sourcing, with the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) working with global energy trader Vitol, after which the premiums paid on petrol, diesel and aviation fuel fell. Uganda announced in November 2023 that it would end its reliance on Kenyan oil marketing companies and intermediaries and has since moved to direct imports through the Port of Mombasa using Kenya Pipeline infrastructure. The association’s demands come as EPRA keeps maximum fuel prices unchanged for the current cycle until October 14, with petrol at Ksh214.03 per litre, diesel at Ksh217.86 and kerosene at Ksh191.38.

Gov’t delivers milk coolers to Murang’a Dairy cooperatives, urges fair pay for farmers

The Government has delivered 12 bulk milk coolers to dairy cooperatives across Murang’a County, in a move expected to benefit more than 18,500 farmers and cut post-harvest milk losses. The handover took place at the KALRO Seeds Head Office in Gatanga. The coolers will support the aggregation of 37,000 litres of milk daily. Speaking at the event, Principal Secretary for Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke said the investment is aimed at increasing milk production, strengthening the dairy sector and putting more money in farmers’ pockets. “As Government, we will continue supporting dairy farmers through investments that improve production, reduce losses and strengthen market access,” said PS Mueke. The 230 coolers already delivered are making a real difference in reducing losses. Following a Presidential directive, the Government will deliver 650 more by January 2027. The event was attended by CS Alice Wahome, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, Nominated Senator Veronica Maina, Dina Muthoni and other leaders. A call to cooperatives PS Mueke urged dairy cooperatives to put farmers first by ensuring they receive good and reliable returns for their milk. Fair pay, he said, is central to addressing the current milk shortage. When farmers are not paid well, production falls and shortages worsen. Fair prices help farmers afford quality feed, especially in dry...

PS Omollo Calls for Greater Investment in Education to Bridge Rural-Urban Gap

SIAYA, Kenya, Sep 19 — Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration Raymond Omollo has called for greater investment in education, saying improved learning conditions are critical to giving children from rural communities opportunities to compete with their counterparts in urban areas.Omollo spoke on Saturday during a funds drive for Gagra Secondary School in Rarieda Constituency, Siaya County, hosted by Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu. The PS said education remains a key tool for transforming the lives of young people and driving development in communities. He called on leaders, parents and residents to support schools by improving infrastructure and creating conducive learning environments.“We have every responsibility as a people of this constituency, as a people of Siaya, and as Kenyans, to support anything that will help improve the learning conditions of our students,” Omollo said.He said investment in education could help bridge the gap between children raised in rural areas and those growing up in major towns, giving them opportunities to pursue higher education and compete globally.“Education is what will make a child from this village to be the same as a child who has been born and brought up in the city of Nairobi,” he said.Omollo pointed to government efforts in the education sector, including the recruitment of teachers and development of school infrastructure, but said more needed to be done to improve learning conditions. He urged communities and other stakeholders to complement government efforts by supporting schools whenever opportunities arise.Omollo also challenged residents of Rarieda to reclaim the region’s reputation for producing scholars and professionals, saying education could help restore its fortunes.“You have an opportunity under the leadership of President William Ruto to rewrite that history,” he said. The PS further urged parents and guardians to ensure their children remain in school and take advantage of available educational opportunities.“I want to appeal to parents and guardians. Let’s not keep our children at home when others are in school,” Omollo said.He said development of schools should not be left solely to the government, calling for greater community participation in improving infrastructure and supporting learners.Oyuu, who has served as KNUT Secretary General since 2021, was re-elected for a second term in April 2026.

NTSA Clarifies Removal of Damaged Vehicles From Records

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has clarified that permanently damaged or scrapped vehicles are removed from its records through a deregistration process initiated by their owners. The clarification came after a member of the public questioned why NTSA does not remove crashed vehicles from its system, arguing that the authority should be aware of vehicles that are no longer operational.“Why doesn't NTSA remove crashed cars from its system? I am sure they know about it,” the online user questioned. In response, NTSA said on Friday, September 18, that vehicles are removed from its records through individual deregistration to ensure non-operational vehicles do not remain active in the national registry."This is done through the deregistration process, which is initiated by the owner," the authority clarified. The clarification comes amid concerns about the accuracy of Kenya’s vehicle database, particularly the status of vehicles involved in accidents or permanently taken off the road.NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa raised similar concerns in June 2026, noting that the Authority lacked an exact figure for vehicles actively operating on Kenyan roads. He noted that permanently damaged vehicles may remain in the government's official database if their owners do not complete the required deregistration process.“We do not know the number of vehicles on our roads, because since we started registering vehicles, we do not deregister them; they die, they use them to make other metals,” said Kondiwa during an interview on NTV.The national vehicle registry contains more than 6 million records, but a 2022 data-cleaning exercise identified gaps in the accuracy and completeness of some vehicle records. The gaps have also raised security concerns over the possible misuse of inactive vehicle registration details through cloned number plates.Kondiwa warned that criminals could exploit the gaps by importing vehicles and assigning them number plates linked to vehicles that are no longer actively operating. What happens is that other people come with vehicles from neighboring countries, pick number plates from the damaged vehicles and put them on the unregistered vehicles,” he added.Nonetheless, NTSA recently introduced the electronic Logbook, as part of efforts to improve the security and accuracy of vehicle records.Introduced on June 10, the eLogbook system integrates vehicle registration processes while improving access to reliable data for traffic enforcement, insurance verification, and road safety.

Murkomen warns politicians over youth violence ahead of 2027

NAIROBI, Kenya Sep 19 – Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has warned politicians against using young people to cause violence, saying the government will come after those who threaten Kenya’s peace ahead of the 2027 General Election.Speaking in Kieni, Nyeri on Saturday Murkomen directed security officials to ensure politicians are not given room to mobilise youth for violence.“Do not allow politicians to be given space to use our youth to incite violence. We will not allow that,” Murkomen said.“It does not matter, and it is not a matter of votes or anything; we will come for you and we will come for you hard. We will definitely deal with you.”Murkomen said his responsibility goes beyond the election and includes ensuring that Kenyans remain safe before, during and after the polls.“My responsibility is to ensure that Kenya remains safe. Even after the elections end next year, besides those who will be elected, as the Minister for Security, I must ensure that next year’s election will be free and safe,” he said. The warning comes just days after Murkomen told the Senate that 1,189 people had been sentenced for offences linked to political violence and goonism since 2022.He also disclosed that 121,870 youths had been incarcerated in correctional facilities between 2022 and 2026, with 11,824 serving sentences for offences related to criminal gangs, violent extremism and political goonism.Murkomen said the government would not allow political competition to turn into violence. He said the security agencies were preparing to keep the country safe as the 2027 elections approach.

Ichung’wah takes aim at ‘sponyo’ politics after Uhuru’s joke

NAIROBI, Kenya Sep 19 – National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has taken aim at the emerging “sponyo” politics, saying politicians should be supported with ideas that improve the lives of ordinary Kenyans rather than money to fight political battles.Ichung’wah made the remarks on Saturday during the launch of the Kieni West Onion Farmers Cooperative, a day after former President Uhuru Kenyatta caused laughter at a funeral in Murang’a by accepting the label “sponyo”.“Sisi sio ma-Sponyo. Na kama tungekuwa ma-Sponyo, tutakuwa Sponyo wa mkulima wa Mkenya na mwananchi wa kawaida,” Ichung’wah said.Ichung’wah’s remarks came a day after Uhuru appeared to embrace the “sponyo” label during a funeral in Kiharu, Murang’a County. The nickname is derived from “sponsor” and has been used by President William Ruto and his allies in reference to allegations that Uhuru is backing or financing opposition political activities.Ruto has repeatedly accused his predecessor of supporting political opponents and efforts aimed at challenging his administration ahead of 2027.Ichung’wah said those with resources and influence should use them to support ordinary Kenyans, particularly farmers. He challenged politicians to focus on issues that directly affect voters instead of relying on political sponsorship.“We should continue being sponsors of farmers. They get seeds, they get fertiliser, they get markets,” he said.He said politicians who had an opportunity to improve the lives of Kenyans should explain their policies instead of simply attacking the government.“If you are a sponsor of politicians, and you had an opportunity to improve the lives of ordinary Kenyans… you had an opportunity to improve education for Kenyans, but you left it to deteriorate,” Ichung’wah said.He also accused the previous administration of failing to deliver on some of the programmes it promised, including Universal Health Coverage and the Big Four Agenda.Ichung’wah used the meeting to cite what he described as progress under President Ruto’s administration. He pointed to the transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Authority (SHA), claiming that the new system has enrolled about 32 million Kenyans compared with about eight million under NHIF.“SHA iko na watu milioni 32 million Kenyans are today enlisted under SHA,” he said.Ichung’wah also cited the Affordable Housing Programme, saying the government had expanded the programme beyond the initial projects started under the previous administration. He said affordable housing is now being developed in Nyeri County and in more than 280 constituencies across the country.Ichung’wah urged political opponents to allow the current administration time to implement its programmes.“You do not need to support anybody, but please give those who have the temerity to do what matters to the people of Kenya time to do,” he said.He accused unnamed politicians of using money and influence to push political agendas rather than giving voters clear policies.“At least give them policies to sell to wananchi on issues that affect them,” he said.Ichung’wah said the focus should instead be on improving the lives of farmers by ensuring access to seeds, fertiliser and reliable markets.
