State Moves to Acquire Thousands of Acres for Multibillion Road Project

The National Lands Commission (NLC) has announced plans to mandatorily acquire more than 2,600 acres of land in Lamu County to pave the way for the LAPSSET Corridor Road project.In a gazette notice on Friday, September 18, NLC said it intends to acquire several parcels of land on behalf of the LAPSET corridor in accordance with Section 110 of the Land Act, 2012.The commission listed dozens of parcels earmarked for acquisition, with the combined area amounting to approximately 1,090.90 hectares, equivalent to more than 2,600 acres."Notice is given that the National Land Commission intends to acquire parcels of land shown in the schedule hereunder on behalf of Lapsset Corridor in accordance with section 110 of the Land Act, 2012, for Lapsset Corridor Road in Lamu County," NLC stated."Interested persons should inspect plans of the affected land at the offices of the Commission at Ardhi House, 3rd Floor, Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue, Nairobi and County Co-ordinator's Offices in Lamu during official working hours," it added.Among the largest parcels listed are LR No. 28108, measuring 218.9 hectares, LR No. 28100, measuring 110.85 hectares, and LR No. 28107, measuring 84.65 hectares.Other parcels listed include LR No. 12852/176, measuring 59.42 hectares, LR No. 12852/178 at 70.664 hectares, and LR No. 23670 at 42.23 hectares.The compulsory acquisition process allows the government to acquire land required for public projects, subject to the applicable legal procedures, including consideration of compensation claims by affected parties.The LAPSSET Corridor Project is a Ksh181 billion infrastructure programme connecting Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan that was unveiled to boost connectivity and trade between the three nations.It involves building a new deep-water port in Lamu, a standard-gauge railway, new roads, an oil pipeline, and airports.The latest land acquisition notice will be specifically used for the  LAPSSET Corridor Road in Lamu County.At the same time, NLC also announced plans to acquire land for the Dongo Kundu Bypass Access Road upgrade in Kwale County.The land is required for the upgrading of the Dongo Kundu Bypass Access Road to bitumen standard, with interested persons directed to submit written compensation claims alongside their ID, KRA PIN, land ownership documents, and bank account details.
