How Investment in newborn units is saving preterm babies in Siaya

A pregnant woman. Photo I ReutersFor years, Siaya County recorded some of the highest rates of child mortality in the country, with an average of 63 deaths for every 1,000 live births. A 2024 survey by Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) found that inadequate health infrastructure accounted for nearly half of preventable deaths among premature babies, robbing the county of some of its youngest lives. But over the past three years, the establishment of newborn units at hospitals in Siaya and Bondo has begun to change that picture. Premature babies weighing less than one kilogram at birth are now surviving and thriving against the odds. There are now partnerships giving these newborns a fighting chance, while helping to bring down infant mortality in Siaya County. At 8am, the cries of newborns pierce through the busy corridors of the Siaya county referral hospital. But here, those tiny cries are more than just noise, they are a sound of hope, a sign that these fragile babies are alive and fighting to survive.Among them is 24-year-old Emily Omondi, cradling her daughter, Kayla, a tiny bundle she describes as nothing short of a miracle.Kayla’s tight grip is a quiet show of strength — a determination to stay alive. Emily was six months pregnant when she was diagnosed with a bacterial infection. The medication she received would later leave her hospitalized. After days of pain and...

IPOA begins probe after man dies in Kitengela police station

A post-mortem examination conducted on Saturday reportedly found no external injuries consistent with an assault. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man at the Kitengela police station. Eric Otieno a Kenyan-American citizen, is alleged to have died inside the station’s cells after he was arrested together with two friends while leaving a nightclub on September 18. His family alleges neglect by police officer as he had underlying conditions, maintaining he had committed no offence when he was arrested.”Sasa ameshikwa akitoka kwa clabu hapo barabara ya deliverance akaniambia I think they need just 1000 bob,” said David Mwangi.Georginah Mwawasi, his wife, said that Otieno was arrested by plain-cloth officers, arguing that he made no offence. “The others were put in cuffs but he was not cuffed and they were put in the lorry. According to the message he sent he said ‘there’s no reason why we are being taken in’,” she narrated. One of the men arrested alongside Otieno gave an account on the incident that raises more questions about what happened inside the station. He claims Otieno known by his street name, J, offered to clean the cells in exchange for his release. But what began as an apparent attempt to secure his freedom would take a deadly turn. "He was rolling down and I started seeing him convulsing an...
