Read briefing Plans for the long-awaited trial of alleged Lockerbie bomb maker Abu Agila Mohammad Masud Al Marimi have taken Ramadan, forecast to start on February 7, into account. All 259 people on board Pan Am Flight 103 died in the 1988 terrorist attack for which Mr Al Marimi is accused. Eleven were killed on the ground in Lockerbie, Scotland, by falling debris from the explosion, which occurred shortly after the flight took off from London on December 21.Of the 270 victims, 190 were US citizens. The US government filed charges against Mr Al Marimi in 2020 and arrested him in 2022. He pleaded not guilty in 2023.The suspect's health problems, defence team changes, long pre-trial deliberations and the introduction of several pieces of new evidence have delayed the trial.Washington District Judge Dabney Friedrich recently set a goal of starting jury selection for the trial in January 2027. According to a recently filed joint status update for the trial, the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan could affect the start of it. "The parties have noted that Ramadan is likely to begin February 7, 2027," the status update reads in part. "Several of the government witnesses observe Ramadan. If witness testimony begins on or about January 19, that will allow three weeks for the government to present any witnesses where Ramadan might affect their availability. "If jury selection is shifted until January 19,...

Read briefing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flew to the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, September 27, 2026, and met with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, according to multiple Israeli media reports. The visit was first reported by Israeli Channel 12 and later corroborated by a diplomatic source to The Jerusalem Post. A senior Israeli official also confirmed the meeting to Reuters.Netanyahu departed from Ben-Gurion Airport shortly after 12:00 p.m. on a private executive jet and landed in Abu Dhabi at 3:10 p.m. He spent approximately four hours in the UAE before his plane took off for the return flight to Israel at 7:10 p.m.. The Prime Minister’s Office declined to provide details about the meetings. The visit took place against the backdrop of a major controversy in Israel over a report published by the newspaper Haaretz on September 8, 2026. The Haaretz investigation alleged that UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed warned Netanyahu in late September 2023 that Hamas was planning a major attack against Israel.According to the Haaretz report, the warning came during a 45-minute phone call approximately a week and a half before the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack. The report stated that bin Zayed told Netanyahu that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was planning an operation that would cause significant bloodshed and destabilize the region. The report cited dozens of sources, documents, and internal correspondence for its investigation. The Haaretz report further alleged that Netanyahu did not pass the warning on to Israel’s security chiefs. Five former senior Israeli officials said the warning was not passed on to Israel’s security chiefs and that the conversation is not mentioned in any internal investigations by the Israel Defense Forces or Israeli intelligence agencies . The New York Times later reported that it had confirmed the substance of the warning through two sources.Netanyahu’s office has strongly denied the Haaretz report. In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said: “No warning was given to the prime minister from the United Arab Emirates before 7 October”. The office called the report part of a “sinister plot with clear political timing, as part of the left’s election campaign”.Netanyahu instructed his lawyers to begin defamation proceedings against Haaretz, the journalists who wrote the report, and “other elements”. Haaretz has stood by its reporting and rejected the defamation claim, saying its “sole purpose is to silence journalistic criticism”.The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not confirmed or denied the specific claim about the pre-October 7 warning. In a statement, the ministry said the UAE Government “does not comment on media stories or speculation regarding conversations between government leaders”. The ministry added that the UAE’s engagement since October 7 was consistently directed toward de-escalation, regional stability, and preventing violence, and that all relevant intelligence has been and continues to be communicated between the relevant entities. The controversy has become a dominant issue in Israel’s election campaign. Israelis are scheduled to vote on October 27, 2026. The election is widely considered a referendum on Netanyahu’s leadership.Recent polls show Netanyahu’s Likud party trailing behind the opposition. A Channel 13 poll published on September 23 showed Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar party leading Likud by 22 seats to 18. The same poll found that 48% of respondents preferred Eisenkot as prime minister, compared with 36% for Netanyahu. A Channel 12 poll released the same week showed the opposition bloc securing 54 Knesset seats compared with 50 for Netanyahu’s coalition.Opposition leaders have seized on the Haaretz report. Gadi Eisenkot wrote on X: “Netanyahu received dozens of warnings for October 7 and ignored them all. He is unfit”According to Israeli state-owned Kan TV News, Iran was the main focus of the talks between Netanyahu and bin Zayed . Israeli sources told Channel 13 that the meeting primarily dealt with Iran and general tensions in the Middle East . The two leaders have reportedly discussed defensive options against Iranian attacks in previous meetings .Email your news TIPS to Editor@Kahawatungu.com — this is our only official communication channel

Read briefing Aleksandar Vučić formally submitted his resignation as President of Serbia on Sunday, September 27, 2026, during a public address. He announced the decision during an interview with Radio Television of Serbia, stating he would submit his resignation around 8 p.m. local time.Vučić stepped down in order to run for the position of Prime Minister in the upcoming snap parliamentary elections. He is the candidate for the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). He was serving his second and final presidential term and was constitutionally barred from seeking a third.Following the resignation, Ana Brnabić, the Speaker of the National Assembly, assumed the role of acting president until a new head of state is elected. Under the Serbian Constitution, the acting president can serve for a maximum of 90 days.Snap parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 25, 2026. These will be the 15th parliamentary elections since the introduction of the multi-party system in Serbia. Vučić dissolved parliament on September 9, 2026, to call the early elections.Under Serbian law, a presidential election must be held within three months of the resignation, meaning voters will go to the polls twice this year. Vučić stated the presidential election would be called more than a month after the parliamentary vote.In one of his final acts as president, Vučić used his constitutional powers to pardon 49 people. Of those, 23 were students and party loyalists suspected of offences related to the protests. Vučić said he made the decision despite opposition from security services. He also excluded 12 people from the so-called “Novi Sad group” and pardoned 11 individuals who had attacked protest participants. The resignation comes after more than a year of student-led protests and growing public discontent over allegations of government corruption. A major catalyst was the collapse of the Novi Sad railway station’s roof on November 1, 2024, which killed 16 people. The reconstruction of the railway station was part of a capital state project based on a bilateral agreement between Serbia and China, not subject to the Law on Public Procurement. Public outrage pointed to shoddy construction and suspected corruption, forcing Construction Minister Goran Vesic to resign.Protests began with student-led blockades of educational institutions on November 22, 2024. Every day at 11:52 am — the time the station roof fell — protesters halted traffic for 16 minutes of silence to honour the 16 lives lost. By early 2025, the anti-corruption protests had spread to over 400 towns and cities in Serbia, becoming the largest grassroots uprising in decadesSustained pressure led to the resignation of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević and the Mayor of Novi Sad on January 28, 2025. Protesters continued their action, with their key request being a call for snap electionsEmail your news TIPS to Editor@Kahawatungu.com — this is our only official communication channel

Read briefing Expansion of the Mzima Springs water project in Taita-Taveta County will commence this year, President William Ruto has announced. He said the Government will mobilise Sh30 billion for the project to tackle perennial water shortages in the county and neighbouring areas. The project, to be financed through the National Infrastructure Fund, will provide water to the Mwatate, Voi and Taveta constituencies and also supply Mombasa City.“The management of the National Infrastructure Fund is already in place, and I have instructed that Mzima Springs water project should get priority,” he said.He attributed the region’s persistent water shortages to inadequate supply, noting that the first phase of Mzima Springs was completed in 1984, more than 40 years ago.Ruto explained that the National Infrastructure Fund was established to finance major investments in roads, electricity connectivity and dams as part of the Government’s plan to speed up development. He made the remarks during a Sunday service at Mwatate Pentecostal Church, Taita-Taveta, on the second day of his development tour of the county.Present were Governor Andrew Mwadime, Mwatate MP Peter Shake, Woman Rep Lydia Haika, former Taita-Taveta Governors Granton Samboja and John Mruttu, among other leaders.Turning to the national unity agenda, the President affirmed that equitable development remains central to his vision of a united country where no region is left behind. He traced the unity efforts to the formation of the Broad-Based Government, anchored on a working arrangement between the United Democratic Alliance and the Orange Democratic Movement.“I was here yesterday and today. I will also be here on Thursday,” Ruto told the congregation. “I was also here in Taita-Taveta early this year, and now I am here again. And I will keep coming.”The President urged political leaders to focus on solutions for their constituents rather than blame others, saying he is deliberately working with leaders across the political divide. He commended Taita-Taveta leaders for cooperating with the Broad-Based Government and reminded them that elective office is a call to service.“Politics is not life and death; it’s a God-given opportunity to serve,” he pointed out. On next year’s General Election, he said Kenyans will assess leaders based on their track record, and criticised those who resort to name-calling, division and insults. He noted that Taita-Taveta had suffered marginalisation partly because some leaders believe the region does not offer significant electoral returns.“Discrimination has been a problem, causing division and animosity among our people,” President Ruto stated, urging leaders to set a good example and work together.Assuring residents that the era of exclusion and marginalisation is over, the President pointed to the Sh15 billion set aside for roads in the county as evidence that Taita-Taveta will no longer be left behind. In regard to the transformation going on in the county, he explained that the long-stalled Mto Mwagodi-Mbale-Bura road is now under construction and progressing well.“In April, only 4km of the road had been done. Now 13km are complete. By December, the tarmac road will have reached Wundanyi and Bura,” he said.In response to a request by Mwatate MP Shake, the President pledged to build the Dembwa-Murray road, reaffirming that the Government will continue opening up the region to improve access to markets and essential services.Beyond roads, President Ruto highlighted the ongoing construction of the Sh5 billion railway line from Voi towards Tanzania. Five stations will be built at Mwatate, Bura, Mwakitau and Taveta.“We are ending discrimination in development. Whatever projects are being implemented in other parts of the country, Taita-Taveta is getting its fair share,” he emphasised. He questioned opposition to major infrastructure projects by a section of politicians, arguing that roads, railways, markets and housing are critical to economic transformation. On trade infrastructure, the President disclosed that seven markets are under development across the county to provide better operating spaces for Mama Mboga and other small-scale traders. While noting that Mwatunge Market is nearing completion, he said it is located too far from the town centre and challenged local leaders to provide land for another market closer to Mwatate town.On affordable housing, President Ruto explained that construction in Mwatate has been delayed by a land dispute that has now been resolved.“The court case that had delayed the project is now over and we are launching it next week,” he announced. At the same time, the President donated Sh10 million each to Kenyatta High School and Mwasere Girls High School for the construction of more classrooms, reiterating the Government’s commitment to investing in education to expand opportunities for learners.Additionally, he stated that the Government is working round the clock to comprehensively address the squatter challenge in the Coast region.

Read briefing Former Justice Minister and People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has announced the death of her father, Mwalimu Jackson Karua. In a statement issued on Sunday, Karua said she had travelled to Kirinyaga earlier in the day to visit her father, accompanied by her siblings. The family spent time with him and sang his favourite gospel hymn before she began her journey back to Nairobi.“We were simply grateful to sit beside him, to see him and spend that time together. I did not know I would soon be looking back on those moments with such tenderness, but I am deeply grateful to have them,” Karua said.Karua described her father as a principled man, teacher and strong believer in character, education and doing what is right. She said Jackson remained one of her strongest supporters throughout her life, from her school days and legal career to her years in public life.“My father believed in me long before I had achieved anything worth celebrating,” she said, adding that he was “always proud, always encouraging, and always in my corner.”Karua said her father was, above all, a loving and generous parent whose values and guidance shaped the family. His death, she said, was a profound loss to his children, grandchildren, wider family and the many people whose lives he touched.“I will miss his voice, his counsel, his encouragement, and the quiet reassurance of knowing that he was there,” she said.Karua concluded her tribute by thanking her father for believing in her, standing by her and loving her throughout her life.“Huruka thayu, baba. Read briefing National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has stepped up his criticism of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta over his recent claim that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election.Speaking during a Sunday church service at Hewani Gospel PEFA Church in Garsen Constituency, Tana River County on Sunday , Wetang’ula questioned why Kenyatta handed over power to President William Ruto if he believed the 2022 election had been rigged.Last week, while handing over the leadership of the Jubilee Party to his deputy Dr Fred Matiang’i, Kenyatta said he remained convinced that the former prime minister Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared President Ruto the winner while the Supreme Court upheld the result.“You, Uhuru Kenyatta, have suddenly changed tune. You are now saying William Ruto never won but rigged himself into office. We were in government with all the instruments of power. Is it really fair to continue saying what you are saying about William Ruto?” Wetang’ula asked. He warned that continued disputes over the 2022 election could reopen political divisions and create tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election.“Do you want the people of Kenya to start quarrelling and squabbling over past elections? For avoidance of doubt, let me tell you, Uhuru Kenyatta, we Kenyans gave you a chance to be our President for 10 years. We respect you as a retired President. Kindly respect yourself, respect the Constitution and respect our country so that we can move forward,” he said.Wetang’ula also questioned Kenyatta’s decision to hand over power to President Ruto during the inauguration ceremony at Kasarani Stadium.“The same IEBC that declared you the winner in two elections is the same IEBC that declared William Ruto the winner of the 2022 presidential election. If you knew he never won, why did you stand at Kasarani and hand him the reins of power to lead the country?” he posed. He described Kenyatta’s remarks as unhelpful and warned against statements that could destabilise the country.“This anger being demonstrated by Uhuru Kenyatta is very unhelpful and unnecessary. The same person you supported as President in 2022 came to Kenya Kwanza and we developed the broad-based government because we recognised that Kenya is bigger than all of us,” Wetang’ula said.“We agreed and sat together. Why are you wailing louder than the bereaved?” he added. The Speaker urged Kenyatta to respect the Constitution and called for dialogue among political leaders.Wetang’ula said political differences should not be allowed to divide communities or undermine peace as the country approaches another election. He also pledged to push for faster issuance of title deeds to squatters in Tana River saying secure land ownership was critical to improving residents’ livelihoods. On development, Wetang’ula cited the revival of irrigation schemes, the Galana-Kulalu project and the proposed Mombasa-Narok-Kisumu-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway as projects he said would boost economic activity, transport and trade. He urged Coast residents to support Ruto for a second term, saying continuity was necessary to complete ongoing development projects.Garsen MP Guyo Ali Wario praised Wetang’ula’s leadership of the National Assembly describing him as a unifying figure.Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana said the region would not support leaders on the basis of tribe. He also waded into local politics, saying the county needed a governor with a strong understanding of financial management.Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe said Kenya had made progress under President Ruto and claimed residents in different parts of the country had expressed satisfaction with the distribution of national resources.“As leaders, we have visited different parts of the country and listened to the people. They have expressed satisfaction with the President’s leadership and said they feel there is a more equal distribution of resources,” Hon. Mugabe said. Also present were Galole MP Hiribae Said Buya and Garsen North MCA Dumba Semi among other leaders.Email your news TIPS to Editor@Kahawatungu.com — this is our only official communication channel
Read briefing Despite student-led protests and political unrest challenging his rule, Vucic intends to run in the snap elections.Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has resigned to seek the prime minister’s post in a snap parliamentary election on October 25, as a student-led movement mounts the most serious challenge to his rule in more than a decade.Vucic, on the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) ballot, has dominated Serbian politics as president or prime minister since 2014. Barred from seeking a third presidential term, he is now seeking to extend his hold on power through the parliamentary vote.Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic, a close ally, will serve as acting president pending a presidential election. Vucic said one of his final acts in office was to pardon 49 people, including 23 convicted in connection with the protests. The election follows nearly two years of demonstrations prompted by the killing of 16 people when a concrete canopy collapsed at a railway station in the northern city of Novi Sad on November 1, 2024.Students have since organised some of Serbia’s largest demonstrations in decades, drawing hundreds of thousands of people onto the streets.Protesters have accused the government of corruption, a lack of transparency and political interference in state institutions.Vucic and his allies reject the allegations that they are responsible for the problems highlighted by the protesters. The student movement is contesting the parliamentary election under the banner “Students Win”, with the backing of several opposition parties, including the Democratic Party, which was once led by former Serbian President Boris Tadic. Its list of 250 candidates includes mostly university professors and professionals from a range of fields. Its platform calls for investigations into allegedly ill-gotten property, measures against corruption and political interference in public institutions and greater transparency in the use of public funds. Some polls suggest that the student-backed movement could pose a serious threat to Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party, although the authenticity and methodology of some of the polls are difficult to independently verify.Belgrade-based editor and columnist Dejan Ilic told Al Jazeera that Vucic should not be credited with choosing to hold an early election.“Vucic is not the only actor in this country. People have said that Serbia is in a bad state, they demanded elections and they forced elections,” Ilic said.Aida Corovic, a former Serbian parliamentarian and human rights activist, said the anger extended beyond the student movement.“Serbia has been undergoing internal change in recent months,” Corovic told Al Jazeera.“I fear that the crisis in Serbia could only begin after the October 25 elections,” she said. “This government has taken over the institutions, it is deeply intertwined with organised crime and it will try every possible way to remain in power.”A few hours before his resignation, Vucic told CNN that if the opposition won, he would acknowledge the results and congratulate his opponents that same evening. The political crisis in Serbia is being closely watched across the Western Balkans.Belgrade maintains close political, economic and cultural ties with Serbian communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo, giving developments in Belgrade significant influence beyond its borders.Tanja Topic, head of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation office in neighbouring Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, said a change in Serbia’s political direction could ease tensions across the region.“It is crucial that the paradigm in Serbia’s politics changes because it would bring relief to the entire region,” Topic told Al Jazeera. She said Belgrade has for years sent mixed messages to its neighbours, presenting itself as a supporter of peace, stability and prosperity while, in her view, contributing to political tensions in the region. That influence has been particularly significant in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Topic said, while relations between Serbia and Croatia have also deteriorated in recent years.“Changing the value system would be a long and difficult process, but I think that disappointment if change does not come could have more serious and damaging consequences, both in Serbia and across the region.”With a population of about six million, Serbia is the largest country in the Western Balkans with one of the region’s largest economies.Vucic has promoted the country as an emerging economic success story, pointing to Chinese investment, energy supplies from Russia and, more recently, growing cooperation with Israel. But average wages remain below those in neighbouring European Union member states.According to official statistics, the average net monthly salary in Serbia was 1,032 euros ($1,174) in April, compared with 1,555 euros ($1,770) in neighbouring Croatia – a difference of about 51 percent compared with the EU member. The contrast in living standards is one of several issues shaping public debate as voters prepare to return to the polls.

Read briefing Israel escalates retaliatory measures as Western sanctions target illegal West Bank settlements.Israel has revoked the diplomatic status of Dutch diplomats at the Netherlands’ Representative Office in Ramallah, Israel’s Foreign Ministry has said. The countermeasure announced on Sunday comes in response to the Dutch government’s ban on imports originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.In a statement posted on X, Israel’s Foreign Minister Gidoen Saar said, “If the Netherlands wishes to continue representing its interests with the Palestinians, it may do so from Palestinian Authority territory, rather than from the territory of the State of Israel.”Israel informed the Dutch embassy that “diplomats operating in Ramallah must return their Israeli-issued diplomatic documentation within seven days”.Saar said, “Last month, we removed the Dutch delegation from the International Support Center for Gaza in Kiryat Gat, following actions taken by the Dutch Government against Israel. I reiterate: Israel will not ignore measures intended to harm it. Any country that acts in a hostile and unilateral manner against Israel will lose influence and relevance in the region.”Israel has enacted a series of retaliatory measures in response to the United Kingdom, France and Canada announcing sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements.Earlier this month, Israel announced a seven-day deadline for the removal of British representatives from the International Gaza Support Center as one of four countermeasures against the UK for imposing sanctions on illegal settlements in the West Bank. The Netherlands brought its ban into force on September 22. The Dutch measure goes further than some others. It bans the import, purchase and sale of goods from illegal Israeli settlements, as well as services facilitating that trade.Bilateral trade between the Netherlands and Israel totalled about $4.8bn last year. Its significance extends beyond the Dutch market, with the Netherlands serving as a major gateway for goods entering the rest of Europe. The legal non-profit Global Echo group said the Netherlands accounted for a third of agricultural exports from Israel’s illegal settlements and nearly half of those destined for the European Union.

The Netherlands’ ban on imports of goods produced in settlements came into effect last week.Israel in August banned Dutch diplomats from a US-led coordination centre for Gaza that is based in Israel, over what the foreign minister described as “anti-Israel measures.”Many countries, including the Netherlands, have long had diplomats who represent their governments with the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah while living in East Jerusalem.Israel has traditionally accredited those diplomats and granted them certain privileges under the Vienna Convention on treatment of diplomatic missions.France and Canada joined Britain this month in announcing a ban on goods from settlements, but Israel has not taken any action against those two countries.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government has found itself diplomatically isolated from many of its allies over its conduct in recent years in Gaza and the West Bank. Two prominent Israeli cabinet ministers have been sanctioned by several countries, while Spain, Ireland and others have also announced a ban on goods originating from settlements.
