The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will mark the death of its founder and late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga throughout the month of October, one year after he passed away. On Thursday, the party named the campaign “Mwezi wa Baba” and said it will hold a range of activities across the country to honor Raila’s contributions to Kenya’s democracy and Pan-Africanism. In its programme announcement, ODM described Raila’s death as a painful moment for the party and its supporters, adding that the former prime minister left a lasting legacy for the nation. ODM said in a public statement that Raila’s death left many people deeply heartbroken, adding that “God plucked the best flower from our midst.” The party said it has therefore dedicated the entire month of October to his memory. Under the programme, ODM will begin its commemorations on October 2 with a nationwide candle-lighting ceremony. Supporters are expected to light candles individually or in groups at 6pm. The party will then hold a major memorial rally in Kakamega Town on October 9, with supporters gathering from Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, and Trans Nzoia counties.
