CS Murkomen orders intensified anti-banditry operations

The Government has intensified security operations in Samburu and Isiolo counties following recent cases of banditry, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said. Murkomen said the operations will target individuals possessing illegal firearms and those involved in attacks against security officers, civilians and livestock. “We will continue with the operations to ensure that all people who have illegal firearms, and those targeting our officers, civilians, and livestock, are dealt with decisively,” he warned. While reiterating that the operations will be intelligence-led, Murkomen regretted a recent incident in which livestock were killed and directed security agencies to exercise maximum caution during operations. “I ask our security agencies to exercise maximum caution during operations to minimise collateral damage,” he said. He also dismissed criticism of the operations, saying the heightened attention was a result of intensified efforts to restore security in the affected areas. “The noise that is there is because we are tightening the nut. We will continue until we liberate those areas before the next election,” he said. The CS further noted that security agencies have so far recovered more than 3,000 illegal firearms and 8,000 rounds of ammunition in the Kerio Valley. Murkomen was speaking at Nandi Hills Stadium in Nandi County, wh...

Tens of thousands attend right-wing protest over Ceuta migrant crisis

Demonstrators are demanding early elections and accuse Pedro Sanchez’s government of negligence.Thousands of people have rallied in the Spanish capital to protest the government’s policy on irregular migration and its handling of a recent migrant influx into the North African enclave of Ceuta.Saturday’s protest in Madrid was organised by right-wing civil society group Sociedad Civil Espanola and backed by the mainstream conservative People’s Party (PP) and far-right Vox.According to the government, 20,000 people attended, while protest organisers put the turnout at 180,000.At the end of July, more than 70,000 migrants stormed into the autonomous Spanish city of Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco, before most of them were returned. However, thousands remain stranded.Demonstrators accused Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his government of failing to protect the borders of Ceuta. They are calling for an early election to be held by mid-November, with Vox demanding Sanchez be tried for treason. Spain’s next general election is not due until August 2027.PP’s secretary-general Miguel Tellado said there was a “widespread feeling that the government has not acted responsibly; there has been a dereliction of duty, extreme negligence”.“Spanish society has to take to the streets to ask the government to defend our territorial integrity,” he added. The July 30 and 31 surge of people into Ceuta led to unprecedented scenes and the deaths of dozens of migrants.Sanchez said on Tuesday that Moroccan border control failed to adequately handle the incident and that an investigation was still under way, adding that Rabat had been asked for answers. The Spanish government estimates that between 6,000 and 10,000 stranded migrants remain in Ceuta.Vox leader Santiago Abascal is demanding that everyone who arrived in late July be deported to their country of origin.Abascal said Ceuta remained “invaded because Sanchez continues to be Morocco’s servant”.Spanish newspaper El Pais reported on Saturday that the government is planning to approve a decree on Tuesday to accelerate the return of migrants from Ceuta to Morocco. The protest is the second under the March for Dignity banner. That demonstration was held in late May before the incident in Ceuta and attracted 40,000 protesters, according to the government.

Pope prays at Lourdes shrine after huge Paris mass

Pope Leo XIV touches the rock at the Grotto of Massabielle, in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, during a prayer with worshippers on Sept 26.LOURDES, France - Pope Leo XIV prayed for France on Sept 26 at its holy shrine in Lourdes, after riding along the Champs Elysees in the popemobile and holding an emotional open-air mass in front of hundreds of thousands of worshippers in Paris. The leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics is on a four-day trip to France, a secular country with deep Catholic roots, on the first official papal visit there in nearly two decades. In the southwestern pilgrimage town the US pontiff prayed at the Grotto of Massabielle, where Catholic tradition holds that the Virgin Mary appeared in 1858 to a peasant girl, later Saint Bernadette.Months of ahead of a presidential election with the far-right surging and immigration high on the agenda, he prayed to the Virgin Mary to “obtain for France wise and generous leaders... eager to serve the common good”.“May they make her (France’s) voice heard in promoting the defence of fundamental human rights and peace in the world, rejecting the mentality of war once and for all.”AFP reporters saw him perform the rituals observed by the many pilgrims to the cave: touching the rock, lighting a candle and drinking spring water. On Sept 27, Leo will meet privately with seven victims of clerical sex abuse. A 2021 inquiry found that clergy or lay members of the Church had abused about 330,000 people as minors in France, over seven decades. In an earlier highlight of the visit’s second day, the 71-year-old pope led enthusiastic worshippers in a mass at Paris’ Place de la Concorde, where a giant white canopy had been erected to serve as a makeshift altar. His prayers were accompanied by choral and organ music as the sun broke through the grey skies.“It is truly good and pleasant when brothers and sisters come together and glorify the greatness of God,” said Pope Leo, dressed in white liturgical vestments. Some 800,000 people had gathered all the way beyond the Arc de Triomphe, the Vatican said.“It’s one time in history to see the pope,” said Aline Riziki, 41, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has lived in France for 11 years.“I dropped everything to come here and see him, to pray for peace in the east” of her homeland, wracked by conflict for decades, she said.Jeanne de Montagnac, 29, came with her husband and two-year-old girl, who was perched on his shoulders.“We’re happy that, even if she won’t remember it, we’re sharing this with her,” she said, a small golden cross dangling over her jumper.“It’s an important moment for us to be surrounded by other people who also have faith.”The first US pontiff was visiting France seven months before voters choose a successor to centrist President Emmanuel Macron.A number of presidential hopefuls were present, including far-right leader Marine Le Pen and centrist Edouard Philippe.Macron did not attend the mass but was represented by his wife Brigitte. The president said in a message on X that France was “proud to welcome Pope Leo XIV and this monumental mass in the heart of Paris”.Earlier in the day, the pope met migrants at Maison Bakhita, an association supporting refugees. Leo said it was “possible to encounter one another and to live together in dignity and peace”.He also stressed the “fundamental role of women in building a civilisation of love”.The association said the pope’s visit sent a “message” ahead of the April-May election.Leo was the third pope to visit Lourdes after Benedict XVI in 2008 and Jean-Paul II in 1983 and 2004.The sanctuary, one of the most important Catholic holy sites in the world, receives some three million pilgrims each year. Catholics credit it with miraculous healings. AFP

Thousands march in Spain’s Madrid over forced eviction of 87-year-old woman

Demonstrators hold a banner that reads: "Not one Maricarmen more", during a Sept 26 protest in Madrid, Spain, over the forced eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from the home she had lived in for decades. A real estate firm acquired the property and raised the rent by 275 per cent.MADRID - Thousands of people marched through Madrid on Sept 26 to protest the eviction earlier this week of an 87-year-old woman from her lifelong home, calling for greater protection for tenants.Images of Maricarmen Abascal being carried from her Madrid flat on a stretcher on Sept 23 after police broke down her door have thrust Spain’s housing crisis back into the spotlight ahead of a general election due in 2027.Protesters chanted slogans and held banners calling for measures to curb rising housing costs and make evictions more difficult as they marched through central Madrid.Abascal, who has become a symbol of Spain’s housing crisis, urged Spaniards to join the fight in a video message posted online just hours before the protest.“I want what has happened to me to serve so that it does not happen to other people,” she said from hospital, where she has been treated for exhaustion since her eviction.“I want it to encourage people to fight and to help change the laws that have allowed me to be evicted,” she added in the video, posted by Spain’s main tenants’ union.Maricarmen Abascal, 87, is transported on a stretcher to an ambulance, after she was evicted from the Madrid home where she had lived for more than 70 years.Abascal was forced to leave the apartment where she had lived for 70 years after a real estate firm acquired the property and raised the rent by 275 per cent to €2,650 (S$3,850), according to the union.Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who in 2025 pledged to make housing a government priority, is under growing pressure to act. There have been regular protests across Spain since Abascal’s eviction. His government is expected to approve a package of measures dubbed the “Maricarmen decree” at its next Cabinet meeting, including the automatic renewal of rental contracts and further restrictions on evictions. But it is unclear whether the package will be approved by parliament, where Sanchez’s government lacks a majority. While a similar Bill was defeated earlier this year, Abascal’s case has increased pressure on political parties to act.
