Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into Strait of Hormuz,” the US official said.Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the attack killed and wounded several soldiers and citizens, and would be met with a “response and punishment” from Tehran, Iranian state media reported.Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported the US carried out a drone strike on the island.US President Donald Trump said last week that all mines had been detonated or removed from the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran has been told that any ship or boat placing new mines will be destroyed. The last known US strikes on Iran were in late July as the war has reached a stalemate in recent weeks with Washington threatening to impose costly sanctions on countries that support Iran. The US and Israel attacked Iran on Feb 28 and Iran responded with its own strikes on Israel and Gulf states that host US bases. The Iran war has now crossed its six-month mark.US-Israeli strikes on Iran and Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed thousands and displaced millions. Eighteen US service members have been killed in the conflict. The war has led to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which before the conflict used to see a transit of about a fifth of the world’s oil barrels consumed. Read briefingSyrian foreign minister and Libyan PM agree to cooperation committee and reopening of diplomatic missions closed for 14 years.Syria and Libya have agreed to reopen Syria’s embassy in Tripoli, which has been closed for 14 years, and reactivate a committee for coordinating bilateral ties during talks between Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah of Libya’s internationally recognised government and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani.Al-Shaibani arrived in Tripoli on Sunday to meet with Libyan officials, according to a statement from Libya’s Government of National Unity (GNU).Libya has been split since 2014 between the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity, led by Dbeibah, and an eastern administration, led by Osama Hammad and backed by renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar. Representatives of Libya’s rival governments signed a deal on Sunday to hold national elections within two years.Damascus and Tripoli signed an agreement to reactivate the Libyan-Syrian Joint Higher Committee, a committee at the prime ministerial level tasked with coordinating political, economic and social ties between the two countries.Dbeibah and al-Shaibani also agreed to open a Syrian consulate in Benghazi, raising the level of diplomatic representation between the two states. The talks covered security cooperation and counterterrorism, according to the GNU statement. The two sides also discussed consular services and the status of prisoners, detainees and refugees from both countries.Economically, they addressed unresolved financial dues between Libyan and Syrian institutions. The Syrian foreign minister also met with Libya’s oil and gas minister and the country’s investment authority chief to discuss energy and investment cooperation. The Syrian embassy in Libya has been closed since 2012 after Libya’s then-Transitional National Council recognised the Syrian opposition and diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed during then-Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s rule.Syrian opposition forces ousted al-Assad in December 2024, ending 61 years of Baath Party rule.In August 2025, a Syrian delegation raised the post-Assad Syrian flag over the Tripoli embassy, signalling that its reopening was imminent.Dbeibah called Sunday’s meeting the start of “a new chapter” in their relations, saying it should be “based on shared interests, practical cooperation and addressing outstanding issues”.

Read briefingPolice in Nyamira County launched investigations into the murder of a 53-year-old man whose body was found dumped and partially burnt in a banana plantation within his family compound. The body of Mark Ondiek Otawa was discovered on August 27, in a banana plantation in Nyamira South Sub-County, two days after he was last seen leaving his home to pick tea.Police officers visited the scene and established that the deceased was likely murdered elsewhere before his body was transported to the family land.Investigators further established that the body had been set ablaze after being dumped at the scene. The police said the head had suffered extensive injuries and was described as having been “totally dismantled”, while there was also a deep cut on the left shoulder. Both legs had been extensively eaten, apparently by dogs, leaving the bones exposed.A panga and a torch were recovered at the scene and taken as possible exhibits as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.Otawa was last seen alive at about 6am on August 27 when he left his home to go and pick tea.His body was later discovered at about 4pm by his 14-year-old daughter, who was on her way to fetch vegetables. The scene was processed and documented by Crime Scene Investigation officers from Nyamira as detectives began piecing together the circumstances surrounding the murder. The body was subsequently moved to the Nyamira County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.Police have not indicated whether any arrests have been made, as investigations into the murder continue. And police in Lamu East Sub-County are investigating an alleged murder reported in Kizingitini Village, where officers were forced to retreat after encountering a hostile group of youths armed with crude weapons.Police officers who proceeded to the reported scene were met by a group of angry youths who allegedly confronted them while armed with various crude weapons.Attempts by the officers to calm the youths and gain access to the house to verify the report were unsuccessful, with the situation becoming increasingly volatile. The officers were forced to withdraw to Kizingitini Police Station and requested reinforcement from Faza Police Station.Upon arrival of the reinforcement team, officers returned to the reported scene and found the house locked from outside. The area chief informed the officers that the alleged body had already been removed from the house and taken to an unknown location within the village.Police were unable to establish the whereabouts of the body or immediately determine what had happened to Bwamadi.Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incident, locate the alleged body and determine whether a murder occurred.Police officers remained on standby in the area as efforts to gather information and prevent any further escalation continued.Email your news TIPS to Editor@Kahawatungu.com — this is our only official communication channel
Read briefingBarcelona are closing in on a move for Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus worth £8.6m (10m euros).A deal for the Brazil international is believed to be at an advanced stage and, while the finer details still require finalising, the transfer is expected to be completed before Tuesday’s deadline.Napoli had shown an interest in Jesus, but the 29-year-old is set to join last season’s Spanish league champions and will travel for a medical on Monday.Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022, scoring 32 goals and adding 22 assists in 123 appearances for the Gunners.Speaking to the media on Thursday, Arsenalmanager Mikel Arteta confirmed that Jesus was not training with the squad before Monday’s Premier League game against Aston Villa (20:00 BST).When asked whether that meant Jesus was leaving, Arteta said: “Personal situations, whatever they are, I think it’s clear.”Jesus would be Barcelona’s third signing from a Premier League club this summer, following the arrivals of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and Rodri from Manchester City.Earlier this week, Barcelona’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez – also an Arsenal target – appeared to end as sources told BBC Sport that Atletico would not negotiate with their Spanish rivals. It looked as though Barcelona were not planning to sign another striker in the event of failing to capture Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, who continue to make a deal extremely difficult. However, the unexpected availability of Gabriel Jesus has changed Barca’s approach. The Brazilian was not initially part of the club’s plans, but the circumstances surrounding his situation at Arsenal have opened the door to a move.Barcelona have taken advantage of the fact that he is no longer as prominent in Arsenal’s squad as he has been, especially with Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres now ahead of him in the pecking order. With Jesus’ Arsenal contract running until the summer of 2027, the club are willing to consider his departure for a fee rather than losing him on a free transfer next year. The main question surrounding the move to Barca is Jesus’ injury history. He has suffered significant knee problems during his time at Arsenal. An anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee, suffered in January 2025, kept him out for 10 months.None of these necessarily means Barcelona will abandon their long-term interest in Alvarez.Following Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres’ departures from the club, Barcelona wanted to add a natural centre-forward to their attacking options. Jesus offers something different from a traditional number nine, with his ability to operate across the front line and contribute to the build-up making him an attractive option for Hansi Flick. If the deal is completed, Flick will be adding a highly experienced forward to his squad. Jesus made 27 appearances for Arsenal last season in all competitions, scoring six goals, while his six-season spell at Manchester City produced 236 appearances and 95 goals. For Barca, the move represents a relatively low-cost opportunity to add experience, versatility and Premier League pedigree to their attack.Email your news TIPS to Editor@Kahawatungu.com — this is our only official communication channel
